The Cesme peninsula is situated west of Izmir in the Aegean region of Turkey. Cesme means fountain in Turkish and has been given a name because it is surrounded with many waterbodies. Cesme is a beautiful land with clear skies and aniseed fields covering a large area.

Cesme was captured from the Byzantines by a Seljuk force led by Caka Bey in the 11th century. It later became a part of the Aydinogullari principality. They used it as Naval base. The Ottoman sultan Yildrim Bayezit attacked and captured Cesme but was defeated by Timurlame and was returned to Aydinogullari. It was finally recaptured by Mohmed Bayezit again.

There stands a 14th century fortress; restored and enlarged by the Ottomans in the 16th century dominating the small port of Cesme. It has now been converted to a weapons museum.

Illdiri situated 20kms of Cesme was anciently called Erythrai and is a historic site with excavations dating back to early Bronze Age 3000 BC. Excavations here have revealed many historical facts, amongst them an old Athenean temple.

The people here are warm and welcoming. Visitors here enjoy untouched bays and excellent accommodation thermal baths give a welcome break from the hectic modern life. Turkish music, Turkish foods and Turkish handicrafts deserve their own mention along with.
